Compulsive Exercise in Eating Disorders
#8 of 10 total courses in the Inclusive Eating Disorder Specialist (IEDS) Certification program
This course addresses the often-overlooked role of compulsive exercise in eating disorder development, maintenance, and relapse. Clinicians learn to identify compulsive exercise across diagnoses, body sizes, and movement types, including behaviors that may be socially praised or overlooked in fat clients and male-identifying clients.
The course contrasts movement rooted in punishment or anxiety with movement connected to joy, embodiment, and regulation. Emphasis is placed on redefining the meaning and function of movement, honoring client ambivalence, and using harm-reduction approaches that center autonomy and safety. Providers also explore how to support clients who avoid movement due to trauma, chronic illness, body shame, or systemic barriers.
Key Topics:
Defining compulsive vs. intuitive movement
Exercise behaviors and their clinical significance
Contraindications for exercise in higher levels of care (HLOC): including SEES protocols if exercise is included in treatment
Exploring the controversy of exercise as part of eating disorder treatment
Weight stigma, gender bias, and invisibility in diagnosis and treatment
Exercise as a form of dissociation, punishment, or emotional regulation
Treatment planning through harm-reduction and trauma-informed frameworks
Working with athletes and clients with complex trauma
Reframing movement using values, embodiment, and curiosity
Collaboration with weight-inclusive fitness professionals
Rebuilding a relationship with movement rooted in autonomy and healing
