Person of the Therapist & The Eating Disorder Treatment Team

This advanced course explores the integral role of the therapist’s self-awareness, embodiment, and interpersonal presence in the treatment of eating disorders.

Participants examine how their own identities, body stories, and countertransference can shape the therapeutic process. Drawing from trauma-informed and relational-cultural frameworks, the training emphasizes ethical self-reflection, managing weight bias, and cultivating therapeutic presence as a foundational clinical skill.

In parallel, the course outlines the structure, functions, and collaborative responsibilities of a multidisciplinary eating disorder treatment team, preparing clinicians to engage effectively across roles and settings.

Key Topics:

Therapeutic presence as a clinical tool and healing agent

The impact of the clinician’s body story, countertransference, and lived experience

Navigating weight bias and practicing from a weight inclusive framework

Transference, embodiment, and self-regulation in clinical work

Avoiding iatrogenic harm and ethical considerations at higher levels of care

Effective team-based care: roles, coordination, and communication

Common challenges in team dynamics, splitting, and scope of practice

Secondary trauma, burnout, and sustainable practice for eating disorder clinicians

Course Instructor(s)

  • Jennifer Pereira, LPC-S, RD, LD, IEDS

Jennifer is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and Registered/Licensed Dietitian. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Nutrition Counseling, and obtained her Master's in Professional Counseling from Amberton University. She has been working with people with disordered eating since 2005 at many levels of care. She and her amazing team at Austin Counseling and Nutrition work closely together to provide an inclusive, safe experience for their clients. In 2006, she was fortunate enough to work alongside Jessica Setnick in her practice in Dallas. The following year, she opened her own practice, Nutrition Paradox. During this time, she was devastated by how many of her clients could not get access to higher levels of treatment because of insurance or out-of-pocket costs. In 2012, she felt compelled to open Project Bliss, a non-profit home for the treatment of eating disorders. Project Bliss provided full and partial scholarships for many clients who otherwise would not have been able to access residential treatment. Sadly, she had to close Project Bliss in 2015 due to funding. In 2015, her family moved to Austin, where she continued her private practice. In 2020, due to the high demand for eating disorder treatment, she started a group practice of a mix of counselors and dietitians, all able to help people with eating disorders and body image issues.

  • Najeeha Khan, LPC

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and graduated with my Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2020. My approach in therapy is that of gentle empowerment and trauma-informed healing through radical self-love. I have yet to meet a client who didn’t need more self-compassion and self-love in their lives, and helping clients work towards that goal is my favorite part of being a therapist! I have been working in the field of eating disorders for 4 years, and in this time, I have developed a particular passion for helping my clients find power in their bodies. My clients have taught me that on the other end of this hard work is a feeling of freedom in your body and soul. So much of disordered eating is a result of disconnection from one’s body, due to both systemic and individual factors. I enjoy utilizing the intersection of science and ancestral stories in helping folks rebuild that connection. My stance is an interpersonal and holistic mind-body-heart-soul approach, informed by being a daughter of South Asian immigrants and a Muslim. I believe in helping you find inspiration in your unique identities and using the strength you derive from them in your healing process. I like to utilize interpersonal and psychodynamic modalities, along with EMDR and narrative approaches.
